Casa Lago Atitlan
Private Residence | 8,750 sf | Proposal | Guatemala
Sited on an extreme slope that opens up to clear views of the volcanoes that ring Lake Atitlán, the two levels of this private residence both follow the terrain and float over it.
The lower level is embedded in the hillside, where stone walls provide a feeling of refuge. The lower level anchors the two volumes of the upper level, which cantilever over the edge, as if floating over the sloped terrain.
The upper level is separated into two volumes which house the master suite and social areas and are separated by a covered entry and sun terrace. Each volume is rotated to perfectly frame the view out toward the volcanoes across the lake. Here, a timber frame lightly sketches out the division between interior and exterior, with wide expanses of glass lending only the mere suggestion of separation from the surrounding landscape.
